Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs): What are the facilities at an IIT hostel?

Here are some facts about IITK.

In order to survive in this world, a person needs food, water, and shelter (As we all have heard).

Food

• Well, Every hall has its own mess and maintains a decent quality while keeping the cost as low as Rs 40 - Rs 50 and serves 3 times food per day (breakfast, lunch, dinner ). Some hall has a very good quality of food but not to all as it all depends on which hall of residence are you living. If you don’t like food then you can order something other (i.e Whichever in the list of extra) by giving a coupon of minimal price and there is also one juice and Ice cream vendor which are attached with the mess in each hall. They provide different types of ice creams and juice of various fruit.
• Every hall has its own canteen which opens till 2 am. Here one can get a variety of food (Veg+Non-veg) at minimal prices which are decided by hostel wardens. In spite of these we have so many other canteens too: like do canteen, cc canteen, canteen nearby CCD etc.
• We have also one MT (don’t know the full form) where one can get chai, pakora, samosa, nimki, etc which opens at 6:00 am and closed at 7:00 pm.
• One can get Domino's pizza, varieties of food or fast food or roll in OAT which remains open till 4:00 am.
• There is also a campus restaurant in IITK where you can get whatever you want and can do delivery orders too.
• And the last one is CCD which you know better than me because I didn’t go there.
• In spite of the mess, One can get juice in front of hall 3 which he boasts off to be best in quality and even pani puri , chat, dosa, corn bla bla bla….. is also available from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.
• The good thing is that one can get food 22 hrs between 4 to 6 am.

Water

• we are getting clean and safe drinking water (cold and normal water) and hot water is also available in mess.
• We have a well-established refrigerator on each floor.

Shelter

• Currently, we have 13 halls (includes 2 GH) on our campus in which two halls are under construction. Each hall has 10–12 blocks and each block has 3 wings (i.e 2 floors) in the old one but 6 floors in new one halls with 16 rooms on each floor. Each floor has toilets and bathrooms with showers and individual geysers with well-maintained waste management and regular cleaning.
• Every single room consists of a cot, table, bed table chair, shelf (wardrobe) on the wall, fan, tube light, big mirror, LAN port, telephone port, splitter.
• Two or three in one room for first years students and In some halls, one can single room in second or third year but in final year single rooms are given to all U.G students and P.G students.
• The washing Machine and Washerman facility is also available who come twice a week and charged as low as Rs 180 per month.

After this, I come to Entertainment

1. Internet: 24x7 hr internet facilities (wifi +lan) at our rooms with no usage limits. Yes, we have also got 3 supercomputers. Its speed ranges from 5 to 20 Mbps. Sometimes we get 300–350 Mbps (run at 6 am, with most campus residents asleep and hence very little network load). Yes, It’s right, I’m not joking :). To explore things you can use No Proxy, Psiphon,Tor browser …etc. In spite of these one can use the telephone to complain management (free of cost).
2. Sports facilities / Outdoor games: In each Hall, we have a basketball court, volleyball court, badminton court and a field where you can play football or cricket. All sports equipment is easily issued, just by giving an ID card to the sports secretary. In spite of these, we have grounds for cricket, football, hockey, four badminton court, six tennis court, three basketball, four volleyball court, two Squash court, two table court, PE ground at the Institute level which anyone can use.
3. Indoor games: Most of the halls have Table tennis, Poker chips, carrom board and some of them have foosball. We have also a Pool table at the institute level.
4. Reading room: Every hall has a small and good collection of books with daily newspapers (like The Hindu, Hindustan time, The time of India, Business related newspaper ..etc) and some popular magazines. We have one of India’s largest Libraries where you can find almost all Engineering books. One of the good things about the IITK library is that it opens 24x7 hr during exams.
5. Music room: In this room, we have a drum, guitar, synthesizer, harmonium, tabla, professional keyboards, etc.
6. Tv room: Every hall has a room in which a projector is set where you can see a cricket match, football match, movies, etc.

Some miscellaneous Hall facilities

1. Gym : We have a small gym in every hall (free of cost) and a well maintained big one in Old SAC which charges Rs 200 per month.
2. Stationary shop : It is there in every hall. You can easily find snacks like chips, biscuits, cold drinks, etc and basic things like soap, detergent, pen, notebook. Mostly, there is a photocopy machine too and a Barbershop is also there.
3. Multipurpose room: Every hall has a big common room where HEC (Hall Executive Committee) meetings held. It’s used for practice during hall level competition and also used for keeping luggage & trunk box during holidays.
4. Air compressors: Not all but in many halls air compressors are available for filling the air in the cycle in cycle tires.
5. Guard: Every hall has a park with seats in between halls where you enjoy the beauty of nature.
6. Parking area: The hostel has properly built cycle stands with shelters nearby all blocks.
7. Guest Room: To accommodate students’ relatives and guests.
8. Cc Room (computer center) : This room is mainly used by first-year students for checking emails and other activities.

• Hall Day: We have hall days once a year, in which anyone is allowed in our hostel. We become the hosts and serve them the best. Eve will include some magnificent performances by various students. Numerous talents will be showcased: Dance, comedy, Vocals, and many more, and DJs are installed too.
• Intra Hall Competition: The Students’ Gymkhana organizes General Championship to promote the holistic development of the students. The events in the general championship deal with all fields of importance for the development of students and in turn all the councils of the Students’ Gymkhana. The events in General Championship are:

1. Inferno: Inter-Pool Games and Sports Competition
2. Teknik: Inter-Pool Science and Technology Competition
3. Spectrum: Inter-Pool Films and Media Competition
4. Galaxy: Inter-Pool Cultural Competition
5. Mélange: Inter-Pool Entrepreneurial and Community Welfare Competition.

In spite of this, there are many inter hall competitions are also organized by Sports secretary like Bhatta league, counter strike league, etc.

Academic facilities

1. LHC: We have world-class lecture halls which include all the things that are related to study like: Blackboard, whiteboard, projectors, wifi ..etc 
2. Auditorium
3. Labs: All labs are well equipped & well established, probably the best in the country. These are divided into NCL (New Core Lab), Northern lab, Southern lab, Eastern lab, Western lab, ACES (Intelligent Information & Automation laboratory).
4. CC: We have 4 computer centers (2 Linux +2 windows) and many more departmental CC too.
5. Library: We have one of the best libraries in the Country which contains too many books
6. Outreach: Fully air-conditioned facility serves as an educational resource primarily used for lectures, guest speakers, seminars, workshops, conferences, academic panel discussions, pieces of training, alumni reunions, and other activities. This office space also has a Students’ Placement Office (SPO) that handles all aspects of placements at the institute right from contacting companies to managing logistics, arranging for tests, pre-placement talks, and conducting final interviews..
7. Counselling Service (CS): It strives to ensure the welfare of the students by providing them emotional, academic, and financial assistance. The Service consists of a team of professional counselors and a group of student volunteers and faculty advisors working in two primary arms: one concentrates on acclimatizing the freshmen to the environment, and the other deals with mental health issues of the students.
8. HC ( Health Center ): You get free treatment here and free medicines too. In case of emergency, we have an ambulance facility as well.

• College Fest: IIT Kanpur organizes various fest to promote the holistic development of students. Following are the events in the Fest :

1. Udghosh : Annual Games and Sports Games and Sports Competition
2. Antaragni : Annual Cultural festival
3. Techkriti : Annual international, technological and entrepreneurial festival

• Flexibility: On deciding about which courses you want to add or drop, branch change, Major, Minor, Double major, etc.

Campus facilities

1. Swimming pool: Anyone can join it by giving Rs 300 per month. It’s open between 5:30 A.M. and 9:30 A.M. in the mornings and between 4:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. in the evenings. Three lifeguards are always available on each slot with proper life-saving equipment at the pool.
2. Visitor’s hostel: Visitors’ Hostel provides boarding and lodging facilities for the Institute’s guests, newly appointed faculty and staff members, delegates, and participants attending various conferences, seminars, symposia, and workshops.
3. Complaint Management: We have a special website for complaining: whatever be the problems in your room, you can fix it any time and really it’s service is amazing or you can do a call too.
4. Banks: We have three banks on our campus: SBI, ICICI, UBI.
5. ATMs: Our campus has lots of ATMs of different Branches. You can find it nearby all halls and the Shopping center.
6. Shopping center: We have two shopping centers in our campus: New Shop C and Old shop C Which include a Stationery shop, Barbershop, Copy point, Mobile Store, Dry cleaner shop, Book store, Garments’shop, Sweets & Bakery shop, Restaurant, etc.
7. Cycle repair shop: We have many Cycle repair shops as well. You can find it nearby all halls.
8. Post-office: Ya, we have one Post-office too in our campus.
9. Ticket booking center: We have one ticket booking center too but for this, you have to go IIT gate.
10. BUS facilities: There is a bus facility from the campus to Kanpur every day. The buses shuttle between the campus and Kanpur regularly every day.
11. Petrol Pump: yes, we have one petrol pump on our campus.
12. Schools: We have two schools on our campus: Kendriya Vidyalaya, Campus school.
13. New SAC: We have a student activity center (SAC)
• It has a squash court, TT court, Badminton court, and pool, yoga & aerobics hall.
• It has room of Senate, President, General Secretary Cultural Council, General Secretary Science and Technology Council, General Secretary Games and Sports Council and the General Secretary Films and Media Council which are elected by the representative body of IITK.
• It also has an Open Air Theatre (OAT) with a seating capacity of over 1400 people. It is used in almost every inter-hall competition like Galaxy, Takneek, etc, and also for many events and shows in the institute. It also has a projector and a great sound system. FMC of IIT Kanpur arranges the screening of various movies and major sports events at regular intervals.
• There is also a food court where the people of IIT Kanpur have food available 12 hours a day. The stalls in the food court include Domino’s, Kathi Roll, Crown Burgers, Wazwan, etc.

Clubs & Communities

We have too many clubs which pursue our passion or acquire a new skill. I can’t list all but I will give a glimpse of some of them.

1. Gliding club: Everyone wants to reach the sky. The gliders club is a temporary solution for those who dream of flying. The club organizes joy rides for the students and also the campus residents. Besides this, they also have arrangements for flying photography.
2. Robotics Club: Robotics club at IIT Kanpur is an undergraduate organization that provides students with the resources to develop robots. The Club offers indispensable guidance, workshops, and tutorials along with tools, equipment, components, and workspace.
3. Electronics Club: Innovation, Imagination, and Application is the motto of this club. The Electronics Club is a hobby group that aims to teach and help people understand the seemingly incomprehensible electronic gadgets in the world today
4. SAE club: The tinkering laboratory initiative promotes active student involvement in the design and manufacturing of hardware; the SAE student team worked enthusiastically, in unison with the staff members of the tinkering laboratory, to bring their ideas to fruition.
5. Prayas: True to its Hindi literal, PRAYAS, an endeavor of IIT Kanpur students, is mainly focused on providing education to the marginalized kids, at least up to the level where they too can dream big Resources and Information. we try to inspire the kids to dream and enable them to achieve it through education with the belief that ' simple effort can fill colours in many lives'.
